Paediatric Speech Pathology
We take a neuro-diversity affirming approach to assessment and intervention, which involves acknowledging everyone’s individuality and uniqueness.
Ropana Allied Health strives to take a respectful approach to all assessment and therapy and continually listen to the lived experiences of those within the neurodiverse community.
Speech relates to the individual sounds used to speak.
A child with a speech delay or disorder may have difficulty forming sounds or may substitute sounds for others, making it difficult for others to understand them.
How can we help?
We will implement evidence based therapy to encourage the development of sounds. We utilise a variety of strategies and play based supports to make therapy fun! We will also consider structural impacts or barriers that may be impacting the overall development of speech sounds and refer to other specialists if needed.
Language skills are measured across two areas, receptive (understanding) and expressive (speaking).
Children with a language delay or disorder may experience difficulties following instructions, understanding others or using words to create sentences and stories.
How can we help?
We typically commence with an assessment to determine the areas of language that require support. We will then work with you to form goals based on assessment findings and your concerns. Language is complex and looks different for everyone (e.g. spoken mouth words, AAC). Goals can vary depending on age and functional needs, but focus is always on connection over compliance.
Literacy or written communication relates to skills in reading, writing and spelling.
Children who have literacy difficulties may find it hard to engage with written material at school, home or in the community.
Literacy may also be impacted by diagnoses such as dyslexia or dysgraphia.
How can we help?
We will typically complete assessments to determine where your child’s skills lie, to create the most appropriate therapy plan. We will then use a targeted and evidence based approach to support your child with their reading, writing and spelling, always considering functional impact and skills.
Stuttering is characterised by breaks, pauses or repetitions in speech.
A stutter presents differently for all individuals, so our approach is individualised, affirming and based on current evidence. We also understand the greater impacts that a stutter can have on an individual, including anxiety or feelings of isolation, so we ensure a holistic approach to therapy, with an aim of building a positive self-identity.
How can we help?
We will work with you and your child to not only implement strategies to encourage confidence with speaking, but also support an understanding of any feelings and impacts the stutter may have.
Social communication involves engaging with others in a way that honours your own communication preferences. It also learning about different communication styles, whilst understanding and embracing your own.
How can we help?
Ropana Therapy takes a strength-based approach to align with neurodiversity affirming practices. This involves supporting individuals to build skills in a variety of areas including self-advocacy, perspective taking and self-awareness.
